I'm guessing it would be able to hack uif to only attempt to load the
ldap library if the ldap command line switches are used. Of course if
the ldap command line switches were used an the ldap library was
unavailable then an error message explaining  which package to install
would be displayed.

If the above was implemented in the uif script then the dependency  on
 libnet-ldap-perl could be reduced to a recommends.

Maybe I'll write a patch for this... but don't hold your breath!
