Another possibility is to go forward with the cleanup logic: completely remove a dependency on an essential package if the required version is found on all supported version. In the case you mention (Pre-Depends: dpkg (>= 1.15.6) ), rmadison mentions that squeeze already provides version 1.15.8.12. So, I think the pre-dependency is no longer required and should be removed entirely. Thoughts ? Dominique
