I've backported this and sent it upstream for maint-5.14: https://rt.perl.org/rt3//Public/Bug/Display.html?id=114454 I'm not sure whether it's appropriate to put this into perl for wheezy. I think the risk of regressions is quite slim and it clearly breaks things (there is another example of it breaking part of amanda at [1]) but it doesn't meet the letter of the release team freeze exceptions rules.
