Your crashes can depend on various circumstances. Please try to start without any plugins enabled and check if icedove is also crashes. To do so open a console and type 'icedove -safe-mode'. Your plugins are temporaly deactivated, the next normal start will bring your plugins back working. If crashes are also appearing please follow http://wiki.debian.org/Icedove#Debugging and report the log. And please decribe what you exactly doing, if the behavior can't readjust it will be hard to fix it.
