Hi,

        Here is some more data. I started saslquthd in debug mode, and then
tried sending emails using my client sendmail, and then using icedove,
to see if there is a difference.

        To eliminate saslauthd backends, I have tried this with pam, and then
with shadow backends for saslauthd, and the results are the same for
shadow and pam.

        Data: using pam for saslauthd mechanism

======================================================================

======================================================================

     First, send using local sendmail as relay:
======================================================================

======================================================================

        Immediately, send another email using icedove, which connect directly
to the remote mail server:
======================================================================
saslauthd[12067] :rel_accept_lock : released accept lock
saslauthd[12070] :get_accept_lock : acquired accept lock

[service=smtp] [realm=] [mech=pam]
saslauthd[12067] :do_request      : response: OK
======================================================================

        So, no change anywhere, icedove works, local sendmail client does
not. The same experiment with shadow as the saslauthd backend:
======================================================================
__> /usr/sbin/saslauthd -a shadow -c -m /var/run/saslauthd -n 5 -d

        There is certainly something wrong with the local sendmail daemon
talking to the remote mail server. The issue now is what the problem is.
