I'm supportive of removing the project at this point. I presently do not have the time to address all of the code changes needed throughout the package and upstream seems inactive. I have stumbled upon a fork of the code that does address some of the memory problems, but does not yet address the reading of an entire file at once into memory rather than streaming. So until that is addressed, I believe bcrypt should be removed.
