Just a side note: I find xdvi very comfortable, you can navigate, zoom and do whatever you like with keystrokes - no need to use the mouse. Evince, at least as far as I found out some time ago, is very "mousy" with little useful keyboard shortcuts. Therefore I wouldn't like evince to be auctex's default dvi viewer.
