It seems that if you don't have desktop-file-utils package installed
then the gnome default browser library call in liferea fails and gives
the error in the bug report, even if the user has a gnome default web
browser properly configured.
Similarly, the gnome-open command seems to break without the
desktop-file-utils package installed, which might indicate a bug
elsewhere...
I'm reasonably sure that gnome-open command from libgnome2-0 and also
the gtk_show_uri() call in liferea is not supposed to break if you don't
have the desktop-file-utils package installed, but I'll have to get some
help from the gnome mailing list.
