I think you need more than just two items to reproduce the problem.
If I remember correctly, Liferea eventually starts dropping items from
the list.  If these two are right at that point, it appeared to
randomly choose one or the other.  I'd see what the limit is, fill the
feed with just enough newer items, and see if the behavior is
reproducible.  Otherwise, I'd close the bug.
