What do you mean by "the recent change to vim-athena"?

Yes, you can.  For example,

  set guifont=-misc-fixed-*-*-*-*-*-*-100-100-*-*-iso10646-*

vim-athena uses the old-style XLFD fonts (like vim-lesstif did), not
TrueType fonts like vim-gtk/vim-gnome do.
