IMHO, you should begin contacting upstream authors ASAP, so that you
have enough time to persuade them to relicense before we are close to
etch release...
Perhaps you could move non-free documents to a separate
doc-linux-text-nonfree package, while you wait for the relicensing
effort to be completed. Then each document would be able to be moved
back to doc-linux-text, as soon as it's relicensed in a DFSG-free
manner...

I understand your point of view.
I personally believe that the right to distribute anonymous
modifications should be granted by a DFSG-free work, but I admit there's
not (yet) a strong consensus on this...
