Brightness control via Fn + F8 and Fn + F9 used to work on my X121e until a
few days ago. Now it doesn't. I updated the Kernel package. I'll try to reboot
with the older kernel and report back.

I can set the screen brightness with
echo $BRIGHTNESS >/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

Regards, Thomas Koch
