Downstream bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/memcached/+bug/1177398 /etc/init.d/memcached supports the "status" action, but this does not work correctly with the multiple instance support patched in elsewhere in the script by the packaging. A proposed patch is in the Ubuntu bug linked above - though I haven't studied it carefully.
