Attempting to narrow down the cause of this bug led me to an interesting discovery.

There's a rather large difference between the /usr/sbin/extlinux-update files in 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-7 and 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-8 that appears (in part, at least) to be related to this issue.

This difference also exists in 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-9.

Here's the diff output from 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-7 to 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-8 and 3:6.00~pre4+dfsg-9:
