I currently have no plans to upload the development branch to
unstable since I have got no idea whe it is giong to be declared
stable and we defintely do not want to ship a development version in a
stable release.

I agree. I would apply such a patch. (Once bug reports for the known
occurences have been submitted and fixed as far as possible.) However,
as I am no coder I probably will not try to write the patch.
