dist-upgrade didn't fix the problem, -16.2 is the latest version in testing. I installed imlib11 and now gfontview works. I think the problem is with gdk-imlib1. It should depend on imlib11, but isn't getting it installed when gdk-imlib1 itself gets installed. New imlib packages went into sid last week; I don't know if these will fix the problem.
