Why are you even trying to turn off sparse_superblocks?  The only
reason why we have the option to turn it off is for compatibility with
kernels over a decade old.  I'm half tempted to remove all trace of it
from the man page and from the output of e2fsprogs, and leave it wired
permanently on.

Or maybe I need to have an expert mode which allows people to see all
of these low level details, but if there are users who are trying to
mess with this stuff, we should just strongly discourage them from
doing so.  Which is why I'm trying to understand what's possessing you
to try to play with this....
