Is that actually a Debian installer image? Debian Sarge 3.1 does NOT
have a 2.6.12 kernel. Only 2.4.27 and 2.6.8.

Did you possibly change the BIOS settings for SATA controller? I know
the ICH5R works much better in native enhanced mode than it does in the
(often default) combined mode. A change there could affect the load
order of modules, and which modules handle the ICH controller.

I am still puzzled as to just what version of the installer you are
actually using.
