Thanks, I had a read of the bug #334238 report.

The ISA SB16PNP sound cards are the oldest part of the computer hardware I am trying to support. If I can find a suitable replacement PCI sound card I'll re-try using udev.

cCTL* devices are not supported because the kernel lacks the
information needed to autoload them and will probably never be supported
since just a few people care enough about these obsolete devices.
See #334238 for a longer discussion, probably this bug should be
reassigned to the kernel.
