I've tracked this down to a corrupted ~/.local/share/mime/mime.cache file. If I rename that file, file-roller works properly. I don't know what program generated that file. It doesn't seem to be automatically regenerated by file-roller. I've attached a copy of my ~/.local/share/mime directory, maybe that will help track down the root cause. (This also serves as an example of I file I couldn't open :)
