Not really, actually. If you check the change log, you can see that
the VERBOSE option was introduced in version 1.06 on July 28, and
renamed to VERBOSE_OUTPUT in version 1.07 on July 29.

Sorry, my fault. I based my words on reports that the first time the
bug appeared was in 1.10-1, without checking for correctness.

The recently released version 1.11 does an "unset". The reset to the
old value doesn't need to be done, because the init script is called
as a subprocess, which only inherits the environment and doesn't
share it.

some basics *nix aspects, especially when they are too technical).
