Further information.

Noticing that there had been a new samba release which hasn't fixed this
problem, I tried:

apt-get install --reinstall samba-common smbclient samba-common-bin

The following output was received, the last line I suspect giving a clue:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 3 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 0 not
upgraded.
3 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.
E: Internal Error, No file name for samba-common:amd64
