I'd like to second this bug. I'm getting this in Debian Jessie - beeps from firefox when doing find, in tomboy notes, etc. - a quite out of the blue disruption which reminds many people of computers in 1995! Also, I suspect that the people who do want this beep are users who are techie enough to no mind having to find a hack to turn it on.
I agree that this should be disabled by default - failing that, there needs to be an easy way to disable this from the GUI. (Actually, I just checked in system settings in KDE and there is a system bell option under applications and system notifications - although it said that this was disabled, I've still been getting the beeps.
