The slackware box with kernel 3.10 on it described earlier has speech output happening over a litetalk synthesizer rather than the sound card. No slackware install can be done with a sound card as it can be done with debian yet so this may implicate pulseaudio and the intel sound card on the amd64 athelon k8 machine since all intel sound cards so far as I know are single channel architecture and pulseaudio behaves badly with single channel architecture sound cards when those get used for screen reader speech production.
