Ok, I uploaded a new package. It seems to be working for me inside my chroot environment.
Markus, when the new package hits the archive, please test and let me know if it resolves your problems. Jesse, just for future reference, I did need to make Debian-specific package changes (as suggested by Markus) because the standard Debian build process overrides the optimization compiler flags.
