Joss pointed out that the semantics should be so that if /etc/X11/default-display-manager does not exist, no DM should start up. Fixed in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~lightdm-team/lightdm/trunk/revision/1966 So please, if you apply this patch, apply this followup fix as well.
