I reviewed the patch applied by JOSM [1], it actually reverts a modification applied to metadata-extractor on 2011-05-01 [2]. Cancelling this change breaks none of the metadata-extractor tests.
Therefore I think it's safe to apply this patch, I'll proceed with the upload to unstable.
