and number of others where I finally found the solution which translates to
Debian as follows:

apt-get install ruby-mysql2
and change "adapter: mysql" to "adapter: mysql2" in
"/etc/redmine/default/database.yml".

Apparently package "redmine-mysql" depends on "ruby-mysql (>= 2.8.1)".
Perhaps this dependency could be changed to "ruby-mysql2".
Also upgrade note in NEWS or README.Debian explaining this issue and the
required change in "/etc/redmine/default/database.yml" will be much
appreciated.
