Jakub, I do not know the details here, but are you sure this is wrong? The preceding part of the sentence says [and a string starting with "nan" for NaN, in the case of f conversion], and I take the "*" to mean a wildcard pattern match, analogous with [a string starting with "nan" for NaN]. This is just my guess though.
