Unfortunately, it uses xdg-open, I think, and xdg-open makes way too many assumptions about your desktop, especially if you don't have one: #661171
Would it be possible to make this configurable, e.g. either let me choose the method (run-mailcap has worked for decades and didn't need to be reinvented), or even just specify a complete path?
