This change would be really nice. It is is holding back bugs on other
projects, it is an upstream recommendation, and it's as easy as adding
"–with-quantum-depth=16" to the debian/rules file. Why hasn't been
done yet?

It pretty much makes Octave useless for Image analysis and is forcing
the users to not only build GM themselves, but also build Octave
itself. It has reached the level where Octave documentation needs to
give instructions to rebuild GM from source on Debian based systems.
