I'd add a pointer to dh_installdeb: it would both explain the concept with an example and provide a direct link to the most popular case: "When using a packaging helper, please check if it has native dpkg-maintscript-helper integration, which might make your life easier. See for example dh_installdeb(1)." I think that would be sufficient for people to figure out that there are high-level alternatives they can use if they don't like the idea of hardcoding invocations in maintainer scripts.
