Okay, thanks for this clarification. This actually helps me a lot. I still haven't figured out when it works and when it doesn't, but there is a difference between whether I use C-o to add lines or whether I use some other mechanism. I will keep hunting to figure out what the problem is. Your hints have probably pointed me in the right direction. Anyway, no need to spend more time on it -- I'll either figure it out or ask some questions. I've typed this message in a manner that I believe should cause it to preserve line breaks.
