I don't understand how that could be possible as the following line is already in the d/postinst, d/postrm and d/preinst files:

 dpkg-maintscript-helper rm_conffile \
      /etc/asciidoc/wordpress.conf 8.6.9-1~ -- "$@"

The version number is wrong, because the removal code was added only in 8.6.9-2.

From the dpkg-maintscript-helper(1) manpage: "If the conffile has not been shipped for several versions, and you are now modifying the maintainer scripts to clean up the obsolete file, <prior-version> should be based on the version of the package that you are now preparing, not the first version of the package that lacked the conffile."

This sequence of upgrades reproduces the bug:
8.6.7-1 -> 8.6.9-1 -> 8.6.9-3
