Hrm. Well, right now sudo only depends on libc6 and the PAM libraries, so it would add another library dependency. My own use of sudo is fairly simplistic, and I don't have an easy way to comprehensively test the consequences of the change. I agree that upstream's docs suggest this should be a no-brainer.
