I enclose two files : - test.pdf (without any password) - test_passw.pdf (encrypted with user password "abc") Please, first open with evince the file: "test.pdf" (to ensure that you can open it). Then start evince and try to open the second file "test_passw.pdf". After that, you won't be able to open evince at all !
