This is why it took me so long to answer, sorry about that (also thanks for
bringing this up again).

It's not so simple. valgrind:amd64 and valgrind:i386 are not co-installable,
which means that if someone wanted to use valgrind on a x86 executable they'd
need to uninstall the valgrind:amd64 and install valgrind:i386, which is quite
annoying.

FWIW, I had nothing to do with the libc6-i386 dependency, but it was added
automatically at build-time by one of the dpkg helper script.

Anyway, long story short, the libc6-i386 dependency is not actually needed (even
when debugging x86 programs) and I'm working on a fix to work around this.
