Yes I know about the package, I trust also the upstream when they did that they did all the usual tests. They did the effort to prepare a release for Debian8. To my opinion,it is better to take all the modifications instead of starting to extract only the most important fixes. I do not want to propose something different than the official upsteam version in the Debian distribution. I do not want to see on internet comment like, do not use the Debian version it is not equivalent to the official upstream version. forme this a moral contract between us and me. Other point , even if this package popcon is very low it is very important for the community behind it. (the synchrotron radiation facilities community [1]) - so my advice as DD to the release team is that Debian8 would be better with this version of the package for this community.
