As you seemed worried about depending on "cron | cron-daemon"; I just gave a try at installing cron-apt. This works perfectly. I just stumbled on an totally unrelated bug in systemd-cron. which is harmless in this case; but would be a pain if /etc/cron.d/package coexists with /etc/cron.d/package.dpkg-old . -- Depending/Recommending/Suggesting "cron | cron-daemon" is the right thing todo.
