This is also how I start fish and I'm unable to reproduce the problem. Your other email implied that it might be a fishd issue. There's been some work on the interaction between fish and fishd in newer releases. I'll be uploading the latest upstream version this weekend. Hopefully that will fix the problems you're seeing.
