This is a good example why it's generally a bad idea to support as many
use cases as possible.

We added the fix for the use case with Caja to work on another desktop
or window manager other than MATE. Adding this "fix" just broke another
use case and after we fixed this, another user will come along and
ask for their use case to be supported and so on and so forth.

Honestly, I don't think we should add too much cruft here just to get
any possible use case working. MATE is designed to work as a whole and
was never intended to be used in Frankenstein setups.

I am not telling users that they aren't allowed to use the software the
way they want. I'm just saying it's simply impossible to honor every
single use case without adding too much craft which in the end will
result in more bugs.

I see it slightly different here. If people/users provide patches that integrate well (and upstream agrees with such patches), I'd be happy to support such "Frankenstein" efforts.

Some MATE components are quite handy on non-MATE desktop, I must admit.
