AFAIK the rule is to not use bash specific syntax (bashisms) in scripts run with /bin/sh. If you use /bin/bash, you can use all the bashisms you want.

Of course, sticking to strict POSIX sh is generally a good thing, but I think we have more important things to work on just now.
