The issue is confined to the get_erase_timeout_secs function in hdparm.c and I suggest the fix is to copy this function from upstream hdparm-9.45 source into the debian source if a fix for jessie(stable) is desired. The diff is a re-factor and minor logic change for probing the suggested timeout plus increasing the fail-safe default timeout from 2 hours to 12 hours. I was about to write a patch to do the exact same thing till I found upstream had beaten me to it! Obviously packaging the new upstream version should cover the issue in sid and stretch.
