Dear Maintainer,
when I install evince, the file /etc/mailcap is updated automatically
and I can see the pdf files attached to an email, but if I remove evince
and I install atril instead, the file /etc/mailcap is not updated.

Is it possible that when installing the package atril the mailcap file
is automatically configured so that mutt can view the pdf attachment ?

thanks

I looked into this issue just now. The issue is wheezy-backports specific and does not exist in Debian jessie and beyond. To get this fixed in Debian wheezy-backports, someone has to backport mime-support >= 3.53 to wheezy-backports [1].

In 3.53 of mime-support, a patch was added that allows parsing of .desktop files via /usr/sbin/update-mime (which gets called by the mime-support trigger after package installation).

Evince in Debian wheezy ships debian/evince.mime (a mime handler description file to be appended to /etc/mailcap). For jessie this evince.mime file got removed by the GNOME package maintainers [2].

In Atril, we don't ship such a file (debian/atril.mime) and won't do in the future.

Thus, the really sane fix is uploading mime-support 3.58 to wheezy-backports (not sure about the side-effects, though).

Closing this bug (as it is a non-stable, non-testing, non-unstable issue) and tagging as "wontfix".

@Gerard: Please upgrade to jessie sooner or later to see this issue solved for you.

Mike
