OK.  We have a tentative diagnosis.  That's good.  Is there something I can do 
to verify for sure that this is what's actually happening and give us a clue as 
to what we need to do to fix it?

I'll do the udev stuff you requested in your previous email (I'm traveling 
right now, but I'll get to it after I return home -- the middle of next week)  
Is that enough to complete the diagnosis, or are there other tests we 
can/should do?
