Okay, so you have a workaround.  That's a relief.

Haven't found time for that yet.  Sorry.  But now that I can
reproduce the crash, it becomes more urgent.  And I've set
the two MALLOC variables in my environment, so I should be
getting random crashes too.  That should motivate me.  :)
