Declaring a conflict between packages is normally only done when they
really cannot coexist (for example, if they both provide two files with
the same filename). Also, since ifupdown is pretty much installed on
every system by default, it would prevent everyone from installing wicd.

I haven't heard of this bug before. Can you provide some more details,
such as the contents of your /etc/network/interfaces, and whether or not
you configured eth0 in wicd as well?
