Oops, sorry.  Yes, the problem is not just with gparted.

peter@joule:~$ su

No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

In wheezy, the sux package was required.  According to
packages.debian.org there is no sux for jessie.  How should
root acquire the "credentials" necessary for X to work?
