Thanks for your bug report. The fix you've outlined should be 
sufficient, and you're welcome to NMU if you like.

Either way, this has finally given me the push to finish off a big 
update to the package (to be 3.0 quilt format, debhelper 9, etc.). I've 
completed that work and sent it to my mentor. (I'm not a DD.)
