I have the same problem on a machine with integrated Intel graphics. I have no xorg.conf on that machine. I only have one monitor connected but I get the black screen with mouse cursor in the middle which is unresponsive. cntl alt f* also does not work. This only started when upgrading to gdm3 3.18.0-2. Reverting gdm3 to 3.14 fixes the problem.
